Universal Rules โ€” Every Stone
๐Ÿ’ง
Warm water + soft brush onlyThe safest cleaning method for any natural gemstone. Mild soap, soft toothbrush, rinse thoroughly. Dry with soft cloth.
๐Ÿšซ
Never ultrasonic on treated stonesUltrasonic cleaners destroy fracture-filled emeralds and can damage any stone with inclusions. When in doubt, hand clean.
โ˜€๏ธ
Avoid prolonged heat and direct sunlightHeat can cause fracture filling to expand and crack. Fading can occur in some coloured stones with extended UV exposure.
๐Ÿ“ฆ
Store separatelyEach stone in its own pouch or compartment. Diamonds and sapphires (hardness 9โ€“10) will scratch softer stones if stored together.
๐Ÿ’„
Last on, first offApply perfume, cosmetics, and hairspray before putting on jewellery. Remove before swimming, exercise, and sleeping.
๐Ÿ”ฌ
Annual professional inspectionA jeweller can check for loose settings, worn prongs, and refreshed clarity enhancement (emeralds). Recommend once per year.

Swat Emerald Care

Emerald is the most care-intensive of the major gemstones โ€” because of its natural inclusions and the cedar oil clarity enhancement most natural emeralds receive. Handled correctly, your emerald will look extraordinary for generations.

โœ“ Do
Hand Clean Only
Warm water, mild soap, soft brush. Rinse thoroughly. Pat dry with a lint-free cloth. This is the only safe cleaning method for a cedar-oil treated emerald.
โœ“ Do
Re-oil Periodically
Cedar oil filling can dry out over time, making inclusions more visible. A professional jeweller can refresh the oil every 2โ€“5 years. Restores the original appearance.
โœ“ Do
Store in the VERDAAN Box
The Forest Green box maintains stable temperature and humidity. Perfect for storage between wearing. Soft interior protects the stone.
โœ— Do Not
No Ultrasonic Cleaning
Ultrasonic vibration will expand and crack the cedar oil filling, potentially worsening inclusions permanently. Never use on any emerald, treated or not.
โœ— Do Not
No Steam Cleaning
Heat causes the cedar oil to expand and potentially exude from surface fractures, permanently altering the stone's appearance.
โœฆ Expert Tip
Inclusions Are Authenticity
The "jardin" (inclusions visible under magnification) in your emerald is scientific proof of its natural origin. A perfectly clean emerald under magnification is almost certainly synthetic.

Kashmir Ruby Care

Ruby (corundum) is one of the hardest gemstones โ€” second only to diamond. An unheated Kashmir ruby is among the most durable natural objects you will ever own. It requires relatively little care compared to emerald.

โœ“ Do
Warm Soap and Water
Safe and effective. For unheated, untreated rubies, even ultrasonic cleaning is generally safe โ€” though VERDAAN always recommends hand cleaning as the default.
โœ“ Do
Store Separately
Ruby (hardness 9) will scratch most other stones and can be scratched only by diamond. Store in its own compartment or the VERDAAN pouch.
โœ— Do Not
Avoid Fracture-Filled Ruby
Treated rubies (lead-glass filled) require the same care as emerald โ€” no ultrasonic, no steam, no heat. VERDAAN rubies disclose treatment status โ€” always check your certificate.
โœ— Do Not
No Harsh Chemicals
Bleach, acetone, and strong acids can affect the surface of any gemstone over time. Remove jewellery before cleaning with household chemicals.
โœฆ Expert Tip
Pigeon Blood in Light
The finest Kashmir rubies display their best colour in natural daylight or incandescent light. Fluorescent light can reduce the apparent depth of colour. Observe your stone in different light conditions.
โœฆ Expert Tip
Vedic Care Protocol
Many Jyotish practitioners recommend energising a Vedic ruby by leaving it in sunlight for a few hours once a month. This is harmless to an unheated corundum.
๐Ÿ’™
Mohs Hardness: 9
Neelum Sapphire Care

Blue sapphire shares corundum's exceptional hardness with ruby, making it one of the most durable gemstones. Unheated Neelum sapphires are particularly low-maintenance.

โœ“ Do
Clean Freely
Warm soapy water is ideal. Unheated, untreated sapphires are robust and tolerate careful cleaning well. A soft brush removes everyday build-up effectively.
โœ“ Do
Inspect Setting Annually
Sapphire's hardness means the stone itself is fine โ€” but the metal setting can wear, particularly with prongs. Annual check by a jeweller is recommended.
โœ— Do Not
Mind Beryllium-Treated Stones
Beryllium-diffused sapphires (not supplied by VERDAAN) require different care. Your VGD certificate confirms treatment status โ€” untreated stones are more robust.
โœฆ Expert Tip
The Neelam Test
Jyotish tradition recommends a 3-day "test wear" for blue sapphire (Neelam) before permanent setting โ€” observing whether the period brings positive energy. This is safe and VERDAAN supports this practice.

Mohs Hardness: 8
Katlang Pink Topaz Care

Topaz has perfect cleavage in one direction โ€” meaning it can cleave along a flat plane if struck sharply at the right angle. Otherwise it is a hard, durable stone.

โœ“ Do
Warm Water, Soft Brush
Safe and effective. No special protocol required for natural, untreated Katlang topaz.
โœ— Do Not
Avoid Knocks
Topaz's perfect cleavage means a sharp blow from the right angle can cause the stone to split cleanly. Treat with care; don't wear during physical activity.
โœ— Do Not
Avoid Prolonged Sunlight
Some topaz varieties can fade with extended UV exposure. Store your Katlang topaz away from direct sunlight when not wearing.
โœฆ Expert Tip
The Rarity Reminder
Katlang is the world's only source of this rose-salmon colour. Your stone is genuinely irreplaceable. Treat it with the care that scarcity deserves.
๐Ÿ‹
Mohs Hardness: 6.5โ€“7
Kohistan Peridot Care

Peridot is softer than ruby, sapphire, and emerald โ€” so it requires a little more attention when wearing to avoid surface scratching.

โœ“ Do
Hand Clean Only
Warm soapy water. Peridot can be sensitive to acids found in sweat and some cleaning products. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning.
โœ— Do Not
No Acids or Rough Surfaces
Peridot (hardness 6.5โ€“7) can be scratched by harder materials in everyday use. Store separately; avoid contact with harder stones.
โœฆ Expert Tip
Mantle-Origin Stone
Peridot is one of the few gems formed in the Earth's mantle. The iron that gives it its vivid green colour comes from the same geological processes that formed the Himalayas. A remarkable origin story worth sharing.
๐Ÿ”ต
Mohs Hardness: 5โ€“6
Neishapuri Turquoise Care

Natural, untreated turquoise is porous and requires the most careful care of all VERDAAN stones. Treat it as you would treat fine leather.

โœ“ Do
Dry Soft Cloth Only
Wipe clean with a dry or very slightly damp soft cloth. Natural Neishapuri turquoise should not be submerged in water as it can absorb moisture and change colour.
โœ— Do Not
No Water Immersion
Natural, unstabilised turquoise is porous. Water, sweat, and oils can penetrate the stone and permanently alter its colour. This is the most critical care rule for turquoise.
โœ— Do Not
No Chemicals or Perfume
Perfume, cosmetics, and household chemicals can irreversibly stain natural turquoise. Put on last, take off first. Apply all cosmetics before wearing.
โœฆ Expert Tip
Turquoise Patina
Over centuries, natural turquoise can develop a patina โ€” a colour shift that many collectors prize as evidence of the stone's age and authenticity. This is normal and desirable in high-quality natural material.
๐ŸŸค
Mohs Hardness: 6.5โ€“7
Natural Aqeeq Care

Natural Aqeeq (agate) is a robust, relatively low-maintenance stone. Its care requirements are straightforward โ€” it is one of the easiest VERDAAN stones to keep in excellent condition.

โœ“ Do
Warm Water and Soft Brush
Natural agate is non-porous and handles gentle cleaning well. Warm soapy water and a soft brush is perfect. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
โœ“ Do
Polish with Soft Cloth
A clean, dry soft cloth will maintain the natural polish of your Aqeeq ring or tasbih. Gentle circular buffing restores lustre.
โœ— Do Not
Store with Harder Stones
Aqeeq (hardness 6.5โ€“7) can be scratched by harder stones. Keep in its own pouch or the VERDAAN compartment.
โœฆ Expert Tip
The Ring Care Routine
For Aqeeq worn as a Sunnah ring, clean weekly with a soft cloth. Before Friday prayer is a natural time to clean and inspect. The stone's natural lustre reflects its wearer's care.
